I love working with unique venues, so was amazed to find that The National Railway Museum in York have started doing weddings, and I'm so glad they did.
A truly unique venue, their weddings can take place on either the platform in Station Hall, or alternatively if you're looking for a small, intimate ceremony you could opt for inside the Countess of York railway carriage. So you can tie the knot in a beautifully restored, atmospheric railway carriage surrounded by sophisticated décor and elegant furnishings. I'm sure you will agree, it sounds like the perfect backdrop for such an occasion.
As one of their recommended suppliers we were invited to be a part of their annual wedding showcase. This was an opportunity for couples across Yorkshire to be introduced to everyone they needed to create their perfect wedding.
Our journey started with trying to get everything in the back of my very on brand, but massively impractical, mint green Fiat 500, Florence. I of course packed too much as usual, but I always say it's better to have too much than not enough, so she was piled high with boxes of samples, easels and photographs as well as plenty of flowers and foliage.
a lot of preparation goes into exhibiting at any wedding fayre and in the lead up to the event I had been busy preparing new ranges, printing, styling and photographing my collections and getting my website updated so as to be able to show it off to all of our newly engaged couples. There were a lot of long days and late nights before hand so it was Mr Day's idea to treat us to a night away in York the Saturday prior to the showcase, to give us a change to unwind beforehand.
York is such a beautiful city and i always love visiting it. we spent the Saturday wandering the cobbled streets of the shambles, eating Yorkshire pudding wraps and sampling the best rhubarb gin cocktails I've ever tasted.
the next day we were up early, and after a full cooked English at our b&B we made the short ten minute journey to the museum, where it was all go to get our stall looking beautiful for our guests.
what i loved most about the set up was the camaraderie between the suppliers, everyone worked together to help make the day a success and it was a great way to network and get to know some new faces in the industry. we were perfectly placed in between levy restaurants, the in-house caterers, who kept us supplied with lemon tart canapés and sandwiches. As well as the lovely Fiona Brook from cakes by no more tiers, and the york pullman bus company.
we had everything at the ready, including free sweets and flyers galore to welcome our newly engaged couples to what was set up to be a great day. As well as the stalls to browse through, there was also a great catwalk show running every hour, which showcased the talents of Zoe Cornwell from Treasured Brides and Treasured Occasions with the help of Luxe Hair and Make-up. Together the ladies created beautiful bridal looks to give you plenty of ideas when it comes to finding 'the dress'.
As soon as the doors opened there was a steady flow of couples who had come to see the venue and to get some ideas for their big day. It was great to meet all of our newly engaged couples and i loved just how different all of their weddings were. We had everything from engagements in a tank, to Alice in wonderland and steampunk touches, to beautifully vintage t-dresses and designs.
the showcase also attracted lots of couples getting married at other venues in York, as well as couples who were getting married further afield including medieval castles in wales and beautiful destination weddings in Italy.
it's safe to say, i was in my element and by the end of the day my mind was so full of ideas of how we could create something beautiful for each and every one.
although we were shattered by the end of the day, it was great to see everyone was still in good spirits and i managed to snap this rather eclectic collaboration between viva la booth and the pennine quartet which had me laughing all the way home.
If you're recently engaged and want to shout it to the world, then I'd love to talk to you about your ideas for your wedding invitations and how we can design you something truly special that reflects both you as a couple, and perfectly sets the tone for the exciting day to come.
